Permadeath has been a huge part of Watch Dogs: Legion’s marketing thus far. It’s almost as inseparable as that one granny you see in every piece of gameplay or reveal. Well, it turns out, fans can rest easy as Ubisoft revealed it’s purely optional.

Creative director, Clint Hocking, took to Reddit to conduct an AMA. Among the most notable questions, fans inquired a bit about the permadeath feature. In particular, confusion arose about the correlation of difficulty and this feature.

In response to this, Hocking explained that it doesn’t matter what difficulty you play on – if you’re not a fan of the permadeath aspect, you can simply turn it off. “Difficulty and Permadeath are separate options. You can play in Easy Normal or Hard, and you can play with Permadeath on or off in any difficulty.”

Additionally, Hocking divulged that this is only an option in the single-player campaign. They also touched on them not being entirely ready to talk about the multiplayer. “… It’s not part of Multiplayer because we found very early that there was too much potential for griefing and randomness that didn’t add to the fun of the game. We’ll talk more about MP soon.”

Watch Dogs: Legion is slated to release October 29, 2020, to the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia. They will also be following up the launch with a PS5 and Xbox Series X launch this holiday.
