Halo: Combat Evolved Could’ve Been Multiplayer-Only

Halo: Combat Evolved

Nowadays it’s hard to envision Halo without a storyline, be it strong or weak, but early in its development and even through a decent portion of it, Halo: Combat Evolved could’ve taken a turn into the multiplayer-only realm. Amidst celebrating 20 years of Halo, Future’s Retro Gamer came to find out that the famed franchise wasn’t always going to have a story.

According to Stefan Sinclair, who acted as one of Halo‘s multiplayer programmers, revealed that Combat Evolved was aiming to be a launch title for Xbox Live. As such, the team was all-in on releasing the game without a solo campaign mode.

For one reason or another, though, that plan was scrapped not-so early in the game’s development.

“Halo had been developed for internet multiplayer even in its most primordial forms.”

Now, it’s hard to think of Halo: Combat Evolved without remembering the story that really brought the franchise together, the Flood, the Halo Ring, all of that. While it very easily could’ve been successful as a multiplayer-only game, it’s hard to say if it would’ve lasted as long as it currently has since there was plenty of luster for the game’s multiplayer features.
